Ask the expert segment - What is a "trip charge" or "diagnostic fee"?

Now that we are in the thick of the Winter season you may find that your furnace can't keep up or stops working all together, so in this session of "Ask the Expert" we would like to cover one of our frequently asked questions about "trip charges/diagnostic fees".

A "trip charge" or "diagnostic fee" is a flat fee for the costs associated with the time and travel to diagnose, inspect and provide recommendations for a home's heating or air conditioning system. These charges are in addition to the repair work and will vary by location and contractor (they usually range from $50 to $100). After the initial inspection and diagnosis is completed the technician will give you an approximate cost to repair the problem or a recommendation to replace your unit all together. At that time it is your choice to either continue with the repairs/replacement or to get further opinions with other contractors.
